For me, portrait photography should always be a partnership between the photographer and the subject. The subject needs to completely trust the photographer to portray them in the best light and the photographer needs that trust, to capture the essence of the subject.

Often, capturing the unique personality of the person in front of the camera is about creating an environment where they feel comfortable to be themselves and empowered to reveal their true essence to the camera. To tease this essence out, I usually begin by talking them through the image making process so they have a sense of control and ownership, allowing them to participate with confidence and enabling them to enjoy the experience.
